Georgia Tech stuns No. 10 Florida State in Dublin with a last-second field goal. College Football Score

If the 2024 ACC season unfolds like Florida State and Georgia Tech's Week 0 opener in Dublin, college football fans are in for a wild ride.

Aidan Birr nailed a 44-yard field goal as time expired, lifting the Yellow Jackets to a stunning 24–21 victory over the No. 10 Seminoles. Brent Key kicked off his third season as Georgia Tech's head coach with a statement win against a top-10 team and the preseason ACC favorite.

Georgia Tech faced a setback on their go-ahead drive when quarterback Haynes King fumbled a shotgun snap, seemingly distracted by Eric Singleton Jr. running in motion as the ball was snapped. The miscue resulted in a 10-yard loss, pushing the Yellow Jackets back to the FSU 38-yard line.

However, King quickly recovered, connecting with Singleton on a 12-yard pass with 41 seconds left, regaining the lost yardage and setting up Aidan Birr for the game-winning field goal.

The Yellow Jackets opened the fourth quarter with a 21–14 lead, capping off an 11-play, 89-yard drive with a 2-yard touchdown run by Jamal Haynes. The Seminoles responded with an impressive drive of their own, covering 84 yards in 15 plays to even the score.

The drive's key moment came on a fourth-down pass from DJ Uiagalelei to Malik Benson, resulting in a 19-yard gain to the Georgia Tech 1-yard line. Roydell Williams then powered into the end zone to tie the game.

DJ Uiagalelei completed 19 of 27 passes for 193 yards but didn't find the end zone, while Roydell Williams led the Seminoles on the ground with 38 rushing yards and a touchdown on 12 carries. Ja’Khi Douglas contributed with four receptions for 55 yards.

For Georgia Tech, Haynes King totaled 200 yards from scrimmage, and Jamal Haynes added 75 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Rutherford also made an impact with 66 receiving yards on four catches.

The game started with a bang as FSU's Lawrance Toafili made a sharp cut to the right, breaking free for a 28-yard touchdown run. The Seminoles then executed a swinging gate trick play for a two-point conversion, jumping out to an early 8–0 lead.

Georgia Tech responded swiftly on its opening drive, highlighted by a 42-yard catch-and-run from Malik Rutherford. Three rushing plays later, they found the end zone for their first touchdown.

The Yellow Jackets continued to pressure Florida State, taking a 14–11 lead in the second quarter by capping a 75-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run by Haynes King. However, as the first half ended, Ryan Fitzgerald tied the game at 14–14 with a 59-yard field goal—the second-longest in school history.

For the Seminoles and head coach Mike Norvell, the season-opening loss to a team that went 7–6 last year is a significant letdown. Florida State had entered the season eager for redemption after being left out of the College Football Playoff despite a perfect 13–0 record.

This defeat is a setback in their quest for revenge and puts them at a disadvantage right from the start in what promises to be a challenging ACC race against teams like Clemson and Miami. Georgia Tech may have just signaled that they, too, are a force to be reckoned with in the conference.

Next up for Florida State is a Labor Day matchup against Boston College at 7:30 p.m. ET. Meanwhile, Georgia Tech will host Georgia State next Saturday at 8 p.m. ET.
